Warriors Won’t Play in San Francisco Come 2018

In a move that shouldn’t catch any plugged-in readers by surprise, the Golden State Warriors have officially pushed back their target date for opening their proposed Mission Bay Arena and office development by a year, conceding that the 2018-2019 NBA season will have to be played in Oakland or elsewhere if they can’t negotiate a lease extension for (at least) another year at Oracle Arena.

And while pending litigation is being fingered for the delay, according to the Department of Building Inspection, the Warriors have yet to start the permitting process.  And as such, even if all pending and potential legal challenges were resolved tomorrow, by our accounting there was a less than a 1 percent chance the Mission Bay Arena could be ready in time for a tip-off in 2018.
